Florida State University - Interdisciplinary Research & Commercialization Building
Materials Science "Idea Factory"
The Interdisciplinary Research & Commercialization Building (IRCB) is conceived of as an ‘Idea Factory’ for material science discovery.
The program and design of the multidisciplinary Interdisciplinary Research & Commercialization Building (IRCB) will promote collaboration, the catalyst for significant innovation and discovery, merging physically and virtually traditional academic and professional fields in a manner that encourages informal dialogue and spontaneous exchanges. This human-centered intellectual environment, which promotes integrated achievement, will be based on a research setting that is both flexible and adaptable, to easily accommodate changing paradigms in research methodologies.
The IRCB will primarily accommodate the research needs of Florida State University faculty and collaborative groups of faculty working in the broader areas of energy, materials, light, and nanoscience. The impetus for construction of this facility is directly linked to FSU’s strategic decisions to grow the faculty in these areas. Past, ongoing, and future investments make the most of the existing strengths across campus, including the presence of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL), the Applied Superconductivity Center (ASC), the Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS), and the High Performance Materials Institute (HPMI) at FSU.
The University intends to hire 70-100 tenure-track faculty in STEM disciplines over the next five years as part of FSU’s ‘Path to the Top 25’ initiative. The IRCB will provide space for 24 new faculty hires in chemistry, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and physics for interdisciplinary material science discovery.Portfolio
